Read on for John's story behind the photograph.

"I have photographed every ice storm since I began photographing in 1975.

This storm was unusual in that it lasted three days and I was able to spend all three days at Walden with my 4" x 5" view camera.

On the 3rd day, at about three in the afternoon, I thought I had photographed everything I could think of when I realized I was about to experience the rare opportunity of a sunset over a valley of trees where every branch was coated with ice.  After an ice storm, it is most common that the sun quickly melts the ice.

Of course I set up in the best location and began photographing as soon as the light began to change.  This image was as close as I could get to the sun just beginning to pass below the horizon.

It is moments like this that keep a photographer inspired."
