Joan Chasan photographed this black-bellied whistling-duck at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord.  The bird, a rare visitor to our area, is more typically found only in the very southernmost portion of the United States and south of there, including Central and South America.  More photos of the bird, which quickly drew many local birders' attention after being spotted in early July, can be seen on MassBird's Bird Sightings Page.
