Nature Sightings

Welcome to Nature Sightings. Here, we post nature sightings that have been reported to us throughout the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers Valley. If you would like to receive weekly e-mails summarizing the latest additions to Nature Sightings, subscribe to our free e-list.  This is a good way to make sure you never miss a new entry, especially for Camera in the Woods photos, which often come in later than other photos and don't appear on top of the list below.  If you have an interesting sighting, picture or video you would like to share, e-mail Dan Stimson

Lisa Vernegaard photographed these trees with pileated woodpecker holes at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Maynard. Pileated woodpeckers will chop out distinctive, rectangular-shaped holes in dead or dying trees to get at insects such as carpenter ants that are feeding on the decaying wood. While we may not often see the largest of our woodpeckers, we can often hear them as they are chopping away. These excavated holes also become good shelter for cavity nesting birds and mammals.
